Statements about Global Warming

03/15/2007

"Global warming is a problem that is here, now, and not going away. The United States must lead – lead smart, lead courageously, and lead by example. It is time to ask the American people to be patriotic about something other than war. We need investments in renewable energy – more efficient cars and trucks – and a national cap on carbon emissions." Speech in Manchester, NH, as prepared.

"By creating a new energy economy – by transforming our energy infrastructure and investing in research, development and deployment of alternative energy technologies – we can not only address global warming and energy independence, we can create more than a million new jobs in America..." Speech in Manchester, NH, as prepared.

"Our nation's dependence on oil and other fossil fuels is contributing to global warming and jeopardizing our national security. To protect our future, John Edwards believes that Americans must be patriotic about something other than the war. We must act now by investing in clean, renewable energies like wind, solar, and biofuels to create a new energy economy, developing a new generation of efficient cars and trucks, and putting new energy-saving technologies to work in buildings, transportation, and industry." John Edwards for President website.  <http://johnedwards.com/about/issues/>

"They're going to have to be willing to give up some of the vehicles that they drive and I myself have driven. They're going to have to be willing to conserve in the use of energy in their homes. There may be other things that will be required. I mean, we have some very serious issues about our carbon - use of carbon-based fuels, you know, there are intermediary steps that can be taken, cap and trade. There are a number of things that can be done to reduce the use of carbon-based fuels, but at the end of the day we may be faced with more serious choices. You know, people are concerned about a gasoline tax, including myself, because of its regressive nature - you can't take it off the table."--- "On the trail; John and Elizabeth Edwards." ABC News Transcripts.

“People who think that global warming is a problem for our grandchildren are living in never-never land.  If you're under the age of 60 and we don't change the course that we're on now there is a significant chance that global warming is going to affect your life.  And the American people have got to engage on these kinds of issues.  We can't stay at home, complain that somebody else is not doing their job and hope somebody else is going to solve the problem.” “On the Trail; John and Elizabeth Edwards.”  ABC News Transcripts.

12/30/2006

"We have got to make changes.  We have to demonstrate that we understand what is happening and that we're willing to sacrifice and be patriotic about something besides just war.  We need to be the example for the rest of the world.”  Regarding global warming and U.S. dependence on fossil fuels.  “Edwards tour stops in Reno.”  Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Well, it's finally spring. No, really, I'm pretty sure spring is going to stay this time. So, now that you've got the option to get outside, what are you going to do? One good place to start is Bike to Work Week (http://www.bikeiowa.com), which is a weeklong series of events highlighting the benefits of riding a bike rather than driving your car. Simple solutions such as bike transportation help put us on a path to reducing global warming pollution - not to mention the path to better health and happier lives. I'll be biking into work this week, and I hope you'll join me in taking this small step.

While I'm talking about transportation... Read More

Today is the last day of ‘Earth Month’ - you know, the month that has Earth Day. It’s nice to see the expansion of the theme from day, to week, to month. Of course, it’s up to each of us to make sure that the values of a sustainable world and brighter future are considered all year - but we’ve certainly got a good start. One thing I found encouraging this month: well over 300 Iowa Global Warming Campaign supporters attended at least one event statewide - and we’ve got more coming up, check our calendar to find an event near you.

Another thing I’m excited about is the Amtrak study released this month clearly demonstrating the feasibility and demand for rail service from Chicago to Iowa City through the Quad Cities...
