MAINE

Maine’s economy is facing hard times, thanks to record-high oil prices. Dependence on fossil fuels is also leading to increased global warming. Global warming has the potential to affect every nation and state, and Maine is no exception. But with swift action, we can fight climate change and bring economic growth to Maine. With a strong investment in clean energy over ten years, the US economy will see 3.3 million new jobs. (i)

Reliance on non-renewable energy sources lies at the heart of our economic woes. (ii)

Maine can help lead the nation to a clean energy future by expanding investment in clean renewable energy. A new energy economy will yield a wealth of new jobs for Maine residents.

Maine has the capability to produce 288% of its energy from renewable sources. (iii)

Maine is already pursuing an aggressive climate strategy. On May 21, 2003, Governor John Baldacci signed into law the Act to Provide Leadership in Addressing the Threat of Climate Change, which established statewide greenhouse gas emission reduction targets of 1990 levels by 2010, 10% below 1990 levels by 2020, and 75-80% below 2003 levels in the long term. (iv)

However, we will need strong leadership if we are to continue the fight against global warming.
