NEVADA
On Tuesday, April 14th, Sen. Reid will hold a town hall discussion on clean energy in Las Vegas. You can join him for this important discussion by watching a live online webcast of the event at www.reid.senate.gov or RSVP on the Take Action tab.
With fuel prices on the rise, Nevada’s economy is in trouble. Dependance on fossil fuels, such as oil, is leading to increased global warming. It’s time to reverse the course of global warming by investing in renewable energy and encouraging energy efficiency. With a strong investment over ten years, the US economy will see 3.3 million new jobs. (i)
Based on current projections of temperature rise, scientists have predicted irreversible alterations to Nevada’s landscape. Already facing the challenges of supplying Las Vegas with fresh, clean water, global warming would bring drier conditions and greater likelihood of water shortages throughout Nevada. (ii)
At the heart of our economic woes is our unhealthy reliance on non-renewable sources of energy. Today, Nevada relies on polluting energy technology-like coal, natural gas, and oil-to generate over 85% percent of its energy. (GRAPH WOULD GO HERE—small and integrated into text) (iii)
We need a strong national commitment to clean, renewable energy, to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and to get our economy back on track.
Currently, Nevada has the potential to generate more than five times the energy it needs from clean, renewable sources. (iv)
Nevada has already taken steps in the right direction on global warming. In 2005, the state mandated that 20% of its energy come from renewable sources by 2015. (v)
While important progress is being made, we must take aggressive action to combat global warming. We will need strong leadership to make this happen.
